Lennox Furnace Error Code E227

Pressure Switch Stuck Open

What This Error Code Means

Error code E227 appears when your Lennox furnace detects that the pressure switch is stuck in the open position. The pressure switch is a critical safety device that verifies proper airflow through the heat exchanger and venting system.

When the pressure switch remains open, it means the furnace control board is not receiving the signal that proper draft pressure has been established. Without this confirmation, the furnace will not ignite as a safety precaution.

Common Causes

Blocked or Restricted Venting
Snow, ice, bird nests, or debris blocking the intake or exhaust pipes prevent proper airflow. This is especially common in Greater Vancouver during winter months.
Faulty Inducer Motor
The inducer motor creates the draft pressure needed to close the pressure switch. If it's failing or running slowly, insufficient pressure will keep the switch open.
Defective Pressure Switch
The pressure switch itself may be faulty, stuck, or have deteriorated over time. These switches can fail mechanically or electrically.
Disconnected or Damaged Pressure Hose
The rubber hose connecting the pressure switch to the inducer housing can become disconnected, cracked, or clogged with condensation or debris.
Condensate Drain Blockage
A clogged condensate drain can cause water backup that affects pressure switch operation and creates improper draft conditions.

What You Can Check (Safe Homeowner Steps Only)

Check Outdoor Venting
Go outside and inspect both PVC pipes (intake and exhaust) on the exterior of your home. Remove any visible snow, ice, or debris. Never block or obstruct these pipes.
Verify Thermostat Settings
Ensure your thermostat is set to HEAT mode and the temperature setting is higher than the current room temperature.
Check Air Filter
A severely clogged air filter can affect overall furnace operation. Replace it if it's dirty, though this rarely causes E227 specifically.
Power Reset
Turn off power to the furnace for 30 seconds, then turn it back on. If the error persists after restart, call a professional immediately.
