What Does E229 Mean?
The E229 error code means the rollout switch has detected flames or excessive heat outside the normal combustion area. The rollout switch is a critical safety device designed to shut down the furnace when flames "roll out" of the heat exchanger, which is an extremely dangerous condition.
This error indicates a serious safety hazard and requires immediate professional attention. Do not attempt DIY repairs.
What Causes E229?
Blocked flue pipes, bird nests, ice/snow buildup, or damaged venting can prevent proper exhaust, causing flames to roll back into the cabinet.
A cracked or damaged heat exchanger can allow flames to escape into the blower compartment. This often requires furnace replacement.
A failing inducer motor cannot create sufficient draft to pull combustion gases through the heat exchanger and out the vent.
Excessive gas pressure can create larger flames that escape the combustion chamber.
Buildup on burners or inside the heat exchanger can disrupt normal flame patterns and cause rollout.
